Jebediah James snatched a couple of plus sized robes from a washing line. Muddy and wet, he could use a long hot relaxing bath, but settled for hasty splash at one of the public water pumps. He ducked out of sight behind a tent and had just taken off his wet clothes when a family came through a back trail. The mother shrieked and covered her daughter's eyes.

"Put on some clothes, you depraved barbarian," cried the man. He shook his walking stick. "I'll give you a good thrashing, I will."

Jeb pulled the robes over his head and struggled with the armholes. The robes got stuck over his head with his arms crossed, and the man poked him with the walking stick.

"Cease this child's play. Put your clothes on properly. 'Tis but midday!" Each point he emphasized with another jab of his stick, Jeb danced blindly to avoid the attack while he tried to explain that things were not what they seemed and owww!

Finally he forced his head through the neck holes and pulled his robe down to cover himself. With a smile and many complacent gestures, Jeb backed away from the indignant man, then turned and fled back to the castle courtyard, and safety in numbers.

The robes were finely made. Even with his wild hair and unruly beard, he could pass as a lesser noble. He examined the material of the robes. Fine enough to get into a game?

Crap, thought Jeb. That's what got me into this trouble in the first place. Bruises grew on his tender skin. How humiliating.

On the other hand, thought Jeb, do I really need two robes? Maybe Midsummer's Eve's time to turn my luck around. Bet one robe and walk away with twenty. 'Twould certainly alter my economic situation.

He heard the rattle of dice.
